Taipei Metro Map
2020A consistent visual language
As the backbone of the city's public transport system, the Taipei Metro has seen numerous expansions over the past two decades. While these extensions have improved accessibility for passengers, the original route map's outdated layout has become less efficient as a navigation tool. This project seeks to redesign the map, focusing on enhancing its legibility and usability.
To address the current issues that contribute to a poor and often frustrating user experience, every element of the map was systematically reviewed and categorised. This allowed the creation of a structured infographic system, ensuring all components are presented in a consistent visual language.
A grid system was employed as the foundation to map out the network and refine the design of the lines and stops. Typefaces with improved legibility were chosen to enhance clarity compared to the original selections, while the supporting elements—such as colours, icons, and legends—were refreshed. Softer colour tones were introduced, and a clear hierarchy was established, displaying only the essential information.
The result is a route map that significantly improves the readability of metro-related information, striking a balance between topological accuracy and visual clarity. Additionally, its systematic design ensures future extensions can be easily accommodated.
